FBI: Sodium Nitrite Abuse Poses a Risk to Public Health
New information on the abuse of sodium nitrite shows it could contribute to incidents of deaths by suicide in populations with potentially high risk for suicide, posing a significant threat to public health. As a result, the FBI has issued a Public Safety Awareness Report (PSAR) to provide suicide prevention awareness and inform public safety partners regarding an increase in deaths by suicide involving abuse of the food additive sodium nitrite.
Sodium nitrite is not a designated controlled substance under the US DEA Controlled Substance Act (CSA), and is readily available for purchase through online distributors. Sodium nitrite is a chemical compound commonly used in food preservation, such as in the production of cured meats like bacon and ham. However, the abuse of sodium nitrite can have harmful effects on human health.
There are several ways that sodium nitrite abuse can be harmful:
Methemoglobinemia: Sodium nitrite can react with hemoglobin in the blood to form methemoglobin, which is unable to carry oxygen. This can lead to a condition called methemoglobinemia, which can cause symptoms such as shortness of breath, dizziness, and headaches.
Cancer: There is some evidence that high levels of sodium nitrite in the diet may increase the risk of certain types of cancer, particularly stomach cancer.
Other health effects: Sodium nitrite can also cause other health effects when ingested in high amounts, such as vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.
It's important to note that sodium nitrite is generally safe when used in moderation and according to recommended guidelines. But, excessive or improper use of this chemical can be harmful. If you suspect you have been exposed to high levels of sodium nitrite, seek medical attention immediately.
If you or someone you know is contemplating suicide, it's important to seek help immediately. There is always hope and people who care and want to help.
