Today, September 8, is 988 Day
Every year on September 8th (9/8), communities across the country come together to recognize 988 Day in New Hampshire—a national Day of Action dedicated to raising awareness about the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. This day is about more than a phone number. It’s about hope, connection, and ensuring that compassionate care is always just three digits away.
Why 988 Day Matters
Mental health challenges touch every community, every family, and every individual in one way or another. Too often, stigma and barriers prevent people from reaching out for the help they need. The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline was created to change that—offering immediate, confidential support 24/7 for anyone experiencing a mental health crisis, or for those who are worried about a loved one.
988 Day serves as a reminder that support is available, and it shines a spotlight on the importance of talking openly about mental health. By joining the conversation, we can reduce stigma, spread awareness, and make sure more people know where to turn in times of need.
A National Day of Action
Held annually on September 8th, 988 Day is a true Day of Action. Across the country, individuals, organizations, schools, and communities will participate in creative activities designed to generate positive buzz about the Lifeline. From local events and social media campaigns to public art projects and community discussions, every action—big or small—makes a difference.
Want to get involved? You can:
Use the #988Day toolkit to spread the word online.
Host a conversation at your workplace, school, or community center.
Share resources with friends and family.
Encourage open and honest discussions about mental health.
2025 Theme: Compassionate Help. Anytime. Anywhere.
This year’s theme captures the very essence of what 988 is all about: empathy, accessibility, and reliability. With more than 15,000 trained counselors nationwide, the Lifeline ensures that no matter where you are, or what time it is, compassionate support is only a call or text away.
The theme is also a reminder that mental health care is not a luxury—it’s a necessity. By removing barriers, offering immediate connection, and building trust, 988 helps make mental health care more accessible for everyone.
988 Day is About You
At its core, 988 Day is about people—your voice, your creativity, and your engagement. The success of this day depends on individuals like you stepping forward to raise awareness, share resources, and normalize asking for help. Whether you organize a large event or simply post about #988Day on social media, you are part of this movement.
Together, we can make sure that no one feels alone in a time of crisis.
