Taking Care of Our Firefighters: Nutrition Matters on the Job

Firefighters and other first responders spend their careers taking care of us. Making sure they have the information and resources to take care of themselves is just as important.

One area that can easily be overlooked is nutrition.

Eating well during a 24-hour shift isn't as simple as packing a healthy lunch. Emergency calls interrupt meals. Schedules change without warning. Healthy food may not always be available. Sometimes packaged food, takeout, or whatever happens to be in the station kitchen is the only realistic option.

Those challenges matter because nutrition is an important part of firefighters' long-term health and their ability to perform physically demanding work. The International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) notes that heart disease and cancer are leading causes of death among firefighters and has developed nutrition resources specifically around the unique demands of fire and emergency medical work.

Healthy Eating Doesn't Have to Be Perfect

The IAFF Center of Excellence is offering a free webinar, "Healthy-ish Eating for First Responders," focused not on achieving a "perfect diet," but on making practical, sustainable choices.

The program draws on years of experience working with first responders and addresses common gaps in nutrition. Topics include eating well during a 24-hour shift and making better choices when packaged or fast food is what's available.

The underlying message is an important one: healthy eating isn't all or nothing. Small, realistic choices made consistently can make a difference.

The IAFF's broader approach encourages firefighters to think about food as a way to support long-term health, job performance, fitness, recovery, and overall well-being—not simply weight or dieting.

Taking Care of Those Who Take Care of Us

Supporting first responders means looking at the whole person.

That includes physical safety on a call, but also behavioral health, sleep, nutrition, physical fitness, stress management, and access to help when it's needed. The IAFF Center of Excellence itself was created specifically around the unique medical, psychological, and social needs of professional firefighters.

Programs like this webinar are a useful reminder that prevention matters for first responders, too.
